Cambodian Woman Construction Worker Assaulted in Jomtien

At 3am on Thursday morning the 10th of October Pattaya police interviewed Cambodian workers at a construction site on Jomtien Second Road after a young 20 year old Cambodian woman was rushed to hospital after being attacked and severely beaten by a fellow Cambodian.

The police talked to a Mrs Tia aged 36 who is the sister-in-law of the victim. She said that a Cambodian construction worker a Mr. Bow aged 21 who had been fired from the job a few months previously after he was caught stealing had come to the camp. He had talked to the victim a Ms Da aged 20 and told her that her husband wanted to see her. He then took her to a secluded area in the camp and attacked her giving her a severe beating, kicking and punching her and attempting to rape her. He then took her mobile phone and 9,000 Baht in cash and left the scene.

Mrs Tia heard her sister-in-laws screams and with the help of other workers took her to Banglamung Hospital where she remains in a serious condition.

The attack was also witnessed by a Mr Taw a 16 year old relative of the victim. He also was injured in the attack, receiving facial cuts and bruises when he tried to intervene to help Ms Dar and his statement was also taken by the police.

The Construction site employs about 2,000 workers most of them migrant Cambodians and Burmese. The police will need to investigate further but there are problems. Not only language problems but also a feeling of miss trust as there have been many raids on these labour camps in recent months and relations between the workers and Thai authorities is rather strained.
